How to Plant and Grow Lisianthus for Cut Flower

LLisianthus is a popular cut flower due to its delicate beauty and long vase life. Here are some steps to help you successfully plant and grow lisianthus for cut flowers:

  1. Soil: Lisianthus prefers a rich, well-draining soil that is slightly acidic (pH 6.0-7.5). Amend the soil with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, before planting.

  2. Sunlight: Lisianthus needs plenty of sunlight to grow well, so choose a spot that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. In hot climates, they may benefit from some afternoon shade.

  3. Watering: Water lisianthus regularly, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Lisianthus are sensitive to overwatering, so make sure the soil has good drainage.

  4. Fertilizer: Feed lisianthus with a balanced fertilizer once a month during the growing season to promote healthy growth and flowering.

  5. Planting: Plant lisianthus in the spring after the danger of frost has passed. Space plants 12-18 inches apart, depending on the variety. Lisianthus seeds can also be started indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. If you want to grow lisianthus specifically for cut flowers, plant them closer together to encourage longer stems.

  6. Maintenance: Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage new growth and flowering. Mulch around the plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Support tall plants with stakes or trellises to prevent them from bending or breaking.

  7. Harvesting: Lisianthus blooms are typically ready to be harvested when the buds are just beginning to open. Cut the stem at a 45-degree angle and place it immediately into a bucket of water. Remove any leaves that will be submerged in the water to prevent them from decaying and changing the water quality.

By following these steps, you can successfully grow lisianthus for cut flowers. Keep in mind that lisianthus is a slow-growing plant that requires patience and care, but the beautiful blooms are worth the effort.
