To plant peonies successfully, choose a sunny location with well-drained soil, dig a hole wide enough for the roots, and ensure the "eyes" (growth nodes) are no more than 2 inches below the soil surface. Plant in the fall, allowing the roots to settle before spring.
Detailed Peony Planting Guide:
1. Timing:
Plant peonies in the fall (late September to October). This allows the roots to establish before spring.
2. Location:
Choose a location with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Peonies prefer full sun, but in warmer climates, some afternoon shade can be beneficial.
3. Soil:
Select well-drained soil with a neutral pH (around 6.5 to 7.0). If your soil is heavy clay, amend it with compost, pine bark, or well-rotted manure to improve drainage.
4. Hole Preparation:
Dig a hole 12-18 inches deep and 18 inches wide. Space the holes 3-4 feet apart to allow for growth.
5. Root Placement:
Position the peony root in the hole with the "eyes" (growth nodes) facing upward.
6. Planting Depth:
Ensure the eyes are no more than 2 inches below the soil surface. Planting too deeply can prevent blooming.
7. Backfilling and Watering:
Backfill the hole with soil and water thoroughly.
8. Mulching:
Apply a layer of mulch around the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
9. Fertilizing:
Peonies generally do not require heavy fertilization. You can add a small amount of fertilizer in early summer after blooming.
10. Support:
As peonies grow, they may need support to prevent their heavy flower heads from drooping.
