This heirloom Artichoke from Italy produces purple-headed fruits measuring from 3 to 6 inches across. These artichokes are a beautiful purple shade that will brighten up any garden. How to grow:

Purple Italian Globe Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus)Seeds should be sown indoors, and transplanted outdoors after around 6-12 weeks, and a few weeks before the final frost of the season. Sow seeds in rows 6" apart, with 4" between each plant in soil rich with nutrients. It is an excellent idea to use composted soil or mulch to insure that plants get necessary nutirents. Throughout growth, keep plants in full sun and water them consistently. Top buds will be ready for harvest earlier than lower buds. Harvest each bud individually when they reach full size or are a deep purple color.Soil Type: Sandy, well darined, composted, loamy.

Nutrition

Globe artichokes are a good source of dietary fibre and folate; a source of biotin, niacin, vitamin C and magnesium and contain a dietary significant amount of potassium. The main phytonutrients in artichokes are the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, which are being investigated for their benefits for eye health.
